5TH WHEEL & GOOSENECK HITCHES

When selecting a hitch, you need to know what the total gross weight of the fully-loaded trailer is in order to determine the hitch capacity you need. The type of 5th wheel hitch is determined by the coupler on the trailer; it will be either kingpin or a 2 5/16″ ball.

When looking at 5th wheel hitches, there are two styles to choose from. One is an under-box floor frame-mounting kit, which leaves the box’s floor clear of obstacles when the hitch is removed. The other is a surface bed-mount rail system in which the hitch locks into either a cross-the-box rail system or slide it into rails positioned in-line with the truck frame.

Both systems have rails mounted on the box floor by bolts that run through the box floor and attach to frame brackets anchored to the truck frame. The difference is that on one system, the rails run across the truck box while on the other system, the rails are in line with the truck’s frame. If you use your truck to haul goods or materials that need to be level, the in-line rail system will best suit your needs.

A rail system that is in line with the truck box has additional holes that allow you to slide the hitch back in order to turn sharper when backing into a tight spot (the “aft” position), the slider allows a truck with a short box to turn sharper with a large trailer without damaging either unit. Systems in which rails run alone the truck themselves and secure it into adjustment holes closer to the tailgate. It is a simpler system that does not require any costly add-ons.

It is important to note that the aft position is not to be used for towing; it is only for manoeuvring in tight spaces. “No-Drill” brackets are also available for most truck models; although the no-drill brackets initially cost more, you will save a lot of time on the installation.
